Thanksgiving in Hamburg
The pumpkin pie. I managed to locate some Pumpkin Pie Filling in downtown Karstadt. They have a “american alley”, although modest, is useful. But if it gives you an idea, a box of PAM cooking spray is about 6.50 Euros. (Yeah thats about 10 bucks). I looked in my dictionary and translate the Kondensmilch evaporated milk. I just bought a ton because I did not know how much I needed. Then I realized that there was no pre-made pie crusts, pies really not good, in general, the word of Pius translated into German Kuchen, which means cake. Yeah, there is no difference here, there is no pie. .. So the next day I headed for the Karstadt and picked up a large box of Crisco. So I tried pie ..
19 pounds is not required
Crust of pumpkin pie and for the first time, and then used a cake pan as there was no pie pans. Overall, the cake was fabulous, topped with a little Schlagsahne (whipped cream)
The Turkey. Well, Turkey is a feat in itself. On Tuesday, I went to my local butcher and asked if we could order a fresh turkey. They told me of the English spoken here that this group was the best way to go about it. We were going to have 6 people, so I only 5 kg (11 lbs) were turkey meat. Well he called the farm or wherever they kill turkeys and they said, is 6-8 kg ok? As I said, whatever, thats fine. Brooke and I woke up at 8 o’clock Saturday morning and headed down the street to pick up our turkey. He caught a huge box then weighed inside the turkey, it was 8.7 kg. (19 pounds) Well, we were not going to just turn down, which tells us whatsoever, and then tried to bring the turkey back home. After washing, we then wrapped in aluminium foil by instructions and stuffed it
Yes, we placed all things … I know …
… Four good legs had to be readjusted accordingly. We thought it would be cooked 4 hours, but apparently, we had some problems with the furnace, which has never really warmed to more than 75 degrees celsius, so it took about 9 hours to cook. About halfway point, we took all the leaves off, then we tried to prop some wood to keep the furnace closed. And later, we transferred the turkey to a grid, and he began juice FINALLY, a big sign.
Farce. The recipe that my mother left me sadly included things like “a box of stuffing mix” and “a can of corn, stuffing mix (they cornbread mix here to start). So, I got out a recipe online group here. I needed to crumbs, so I went to the local bakery and asked for a loaf of white bread. They did not really what I was doing and gave me one that they said “that schmeckt ein anders” (taste a little different), so I said whatever, I will take it. It tasted really well done and well ended up being a good mix. I cut the bread the night before (not easy
The legs barely hold in the country.
Feat German bread with the crust is hard enough), then on Friday put the whole recipe together. We went to cook the stuffing and get our supper ready … And well out of the oven. We ate chocolate and planned to order a pizza, planned to move through megans house, and then learned that everything that happened is the fuse is out. Haha. Oh well.
Corn Pudding. No worries here, which is easy to do, no matter where you are in the world and always a good taste. My contribution to all family gatherings.
Robert showed up around mid-day and then Megan Kiel, my friend from Australia, and more directed towards the mid-afternoon. It has even contributed a dish typical American casserone green beans, although the onions should not be located in Germany. My roommate Tina and her boyfried joined in the festivities as well.
While we were cooking the turkey, I think it was a little hot in the kitchen and one of the pillsbury cans burst open and flew into the air. I think it gave us all a good laugh after we received more than a heart attack to try
For Turkey to cook
To understand what happened. I Corn Pudding preparedness and we waited on the turkey, and I think about 3 hours, we opened the wine because we needed a drink or to go through the day.
FINALLY approximately 6 hours, we decided that at least TOP of the turkey is cooked enough to eat, so we took it out of the oven and then cook the corn pudding, and proceeded to heat sweet potatoes ( Robert made fabulous recipe!), I spotted a few American Marshmellows in this alley in the Kastadt which has been very good. We heated stew of green beans, made some sauce, and bake bread. At about 6:45, we were finally ready to eat. A long day of wine and salsa to keep us sane, we were starving our tasty meal.
The whole, it was an adventure and I had a wonderful time eating meals and enjoy great company. These times are always a reminder of what is Thanksgiving, enjoying each other. It was great to laugh and relax and have fun. I am enclosing some pictures fun for everybody to enoy.
Since Thanksgiving, I continued
Look, we are so creative! But the four who was cut was good!
